DIY Watercolor Mugs

Since I am always doing something crafty, I decided to make something for my close friends. I already planned to give everyone snowman soup inside of a plain mug. However, as I scrolled through my Facebook timeline I came across a video. It was a how-to on DIY watercolor mug….

With nail polish!!! I am the queen of cheap, erm I mean saving money. 😉 So, you bet I tried this out! Warning: the scent is really strong so if you are pregnant this is not recommended! I would help little children who want to do this and if you have any lung conditions or asthma, ask someone to help you!!!

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. 1-3 Nail polish of your choice
2. Plain mug
3. A bowl deep enough to dip your mug in and one you will throw away afterwards. This will ruin your bowl!
4. Warm water
5. Acrylic Sealant

Getting my hands dirty

Fill warm water in your bowl, then pour one nail polish in a circular motion; that way it will disperse. Afterwards, you want to quickly pour another nail polish. I say quickly because it does dry up very quickly! You can pour it in a zigzag motion, circular, add a design, however you’d like. You can also use a toothpick to create lines.

Once you’re finished, you want to go ahead and dip the mug from the bottom! You can decide how much you want the mug to be covered with nail polish.

My trial mug. I did not disperse the nail polish. I added them in droplets and they sunk to the bottom. I also ran out of the color choices, so I kept having to throw away the water and trying again.

Voila! I did not do this step, but if you want the paint to last longer, spray acrylic sealant on the mugs.

Let them dry for about 2 hours in a cool and windy place.

Once they are dry, fill them up with whatever you desire. I did snowman soup, so I filled mine with hot cocoa packets, marshmallows, candy canes, and chocolates. I also added a cupcake. In a zip lock bag, I placed a holiday cookie inside as well as more marshmallows.

You can place flowers, art supplies, makeup, toothbrush, candy, or just about anything inside! I’m going to make one for myself and use it to place more of my makeup brushes.

Now let’s wrap them up!

We are done!

Here’s another tip to keep these lasting longer:

DO NOT PLACE THEM IN A DISHWASHER!! The paint will come right off. Hand wash only and don’t scrub them. I love mugs and I think it’s something you can’t have enough of like shoes. I would love it if you’d share some of your mugs with me! Comment below to share them!

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
